Christie hopes to revive both the casino industry and the faltering horse racing industry by installing video-lottery terminals at state-owned racetracks.  Foes to this strategy say that this would destroy the uniqueness of Atlantic City, and that fewer people would visit the resort town.  While Christie maintains that his foremost interest is the preservation of Atlantic City, he states that he wants to make horse racing in New Jersey financially independent.  At the present time, the casinos pay 30 million annually to subsidize horse racing state-wide.
